The Versus CultureIs it any wonder that the United States, so steeped in competitive sports culture at all levels, has a political culture that has become a mimicry of the sporting world? Or that partisanship in politics is framed (and thus encouraged) by the media as a kind of great tournament between combatants and teams? Between winners and losers?

Opposing teams in competitive sport generally don’t cooperate. Nor is seeking compromise part of the game. Spend enough time soaked in, or exposed to, this ritualistic dichotomy, and soon every area of life in which there is debate or discussion is transformed into a win-lose metaphor: the law, academia, gender, politics…
